N1 Japanese Reading Practice: The Moth on the Light

On a summer night a small flying insect clings to the cover of a fluorescent light. The narrator almost brushes it away. It is not doing harm—and yet there is no reason to let it linger in the room. They switch the light off. The insect stays a while on the inside of the white cover; then only its outline fades in the darkened room. It is less that they overlooked something than that the light gave up first.

- かといって for a blocked alternative
- 害があるわけではない。かといって…理由もない rejects both “kill it” and “welcome it.” The next action has to be something else.
- 〜ておく for leaving a state
- 長居させておく is not one flick of the hand. It is the idea of allowing the insect to remain.

- 見逃したというより、光の方が先に折れた: the ending refuses a moral reading. The light quit; the narrator did not let it off.
