N3 Japanese Reading Practice: Elevator Notice
This free JLPT N3 reading practice is a short apartment-building scene: a notice about elevator inspection, a plan to carry a heavy load, and a quiet change of day. Use furigana if you need it, study the notice language, then keep training with short passages in Yomigi.

Leaving the apartment, the narrator finds a new notice: elevator inspection this Saturday, so residents should use the stairs. They had planned to carry a large load down to the first floor that day, and reluctantly decide to do it on Sunday instead.
Key Vocabulary
- 掲示板けいじばんnoticeboard / bulletin board
- お知らせおしらせnotice / announcement
- 点検てんけんinspection / maintenance check
- 階段かいだんstairs / staircase
- 荷物にもつluggage / belongings / a load to carry
- 仕方なくしかたなくreluctantly / having no other choice
Grammar Notes
- 〜と for “when”
- 玄関を出ると sets the discovery as what they noticed on leaving—not a long “if” clause.
- つもりだった for an unfulfilled plan
- 運ぶつもりだった is what they had intended for Saturday. The notice makes that plan awkward, so the next sentence changes it.
- ことにした for a decision
- 日曜日に運ぶことにした reports a choice they settled on, not a rule someone else imposed.
