N3 Japanese Reading Practice: Elevator Notice

This free JLPT N3 reading practice is a short apartment-building scene: a notice about elevator inspection, a plan to carry a heavy load, and a quiet change of day. Use furigana if you need it, study the notice language, then keep training with short passages in Yomigi.

Summary

Leaving the apartment, the narrator finds a new notice: elevator inspection this Saturday, so residents should use the stairs. They had planned to carry a large load down to the first floor that day, and reluctantly decide to do it on Sunday instead.

Key Vocabulary

  • 掲示板けいじばんnoticeboard / bulletin board
  • お知らせおしらせnotice / announcement
  • 点検てんけんinspection / maintenance check
  • 階段かいだんstairs / staircase
  • 荷物にもつluggage / belongings / a load to carry
  • 仕方なくしかたなくreluctantly / having no other choice

Grammar Notes

〜と for “when”
玄関を出ると sets the discovery as what they noticed on leaving—not a long “if” clause.
つもりだった for an unfulfilled plan
運ぶつもりだった is what they had intended for Saturday. The notice makes that plan awkward, so the next sentence changes it.
ことにした for a decision
日曜日に運ぶことにした reports a choice they settled on, not a rule someone else imposed.

Comprehension

01What did the notice say would happen on Saturday?

Elevator inspection (エレベーターの点検). Residents should use the stairs during that time.

02What had the narrator planned to do that day?

Carry a large load down to the first floor.

03What did they decide to do instead?

Carry the load on Sunday instead (日曜日に運ぶことにした).

Why This Level

Notice register plus a personal schedule change—more N3 than a plain event list.

Uses 〜と, つもりだった, and ことにした in one short paragraph.

Still one building scene, not an essay about housing policy.
