What is Yomigi?
Yomigi (読み技) is a Japanese reading trainer. You read short passages near your current edge, get help when you are stuck, answer a quick quiz, and that evidence shapes your next practice.
Does Yomigi have streaks, points, or gamification?
No. Yomigi is a quiet reading app with one job: Japanese at your level. There are no streaks, XP, leagues, or daily goals. You read a short passage, look up words you need, answer a few questions, and that is the session.
Is Yomigi for complete beginners?
Not really. You should be comfortable with hiragana and katakana and know at least a little basic Japanese. If you are still learning the scripts from zero, start there first.
Is this a replacement for Anki, WaniKani, Bunpro, or a textbook?
No. Those tools are strong for vocab, kanji, grammar drills, and structured study. Yomigi is for reading in context. Many learners use both.
Are the passages written by AI, and can AI be wrong?
Yes. Fresh passages are AI-generated, checked automatically, and sometimes revised; no human reviewer reads them before you do. Japanese, quizzes, and lookup explanations can still be unnatural, unfair, or wrong. Report anything that feels off—the passage is attached automatically.
Do the public reading samples include furigana?
Yes. Every public sample passage has a furigana toggle so you can read with ruby or turn it off. Tapping words for dictionary-style help is the in-app reader, not those static pages.
How can I read Japanese faster?
Finish short passages near your level instead of decoding every word. Look up only what blocks the scene, use furigana on a first pass, then reread with less help. Speed is a side effect of comprehension, not a stopwatch.
What is tadoku / extensive reading?
Tadoku (extensive reading) is reading a lot of Japanese that is already easy, usually without a dictionary. You skip difficult parts and switch texts when reading stops flowing. Public N5–N4 samples on this site can be easy volume if you already understand them; the Yomigi app is closer to short targeted practice with lookups.
Is NHK Easy Japanese a good way to practice reading?
Yes, when you want current events in easier Japanese. NEWS WEB EASY is simplified news, not a graded-reader app: names and topics still follow the day. Use it for news you can already follow. Yomigi is short targeted practice with lookups and a quiz, not a news reader.
What are the best Japanese reading practice websites?
It depends on the job, not a ranking. Tadoku for free leveled PDFs, NHK Easy for simplified news, MATCHA for easy culture writing, paste-a-text tools when you already have material. Yomigi’s public pages are a small set of JLPT samples; the signed-in app is a short trainer, not a library.
What happens when I click a word?
Dictionary-style help and short context appear for that word or phrase in the sentence. It is meant to unblock you, not replace your own reading effort.
How does practice adapt?
Over sessions the profile tracks lookups, quiz answers, difficulty ratings, and reading friction—not just a single JLPT label. Future passages are graded toward that edge, but calibration is still improving and will not be perfect yet.
Which Japanese levels does it support?
N5 through N1 practice lanes. Shorter passages are the most reliable today; longer and harder lanes are still improving.
Is there a free Japanese reading level test?
Yes. The public reading level test uses five short curated passages to sketch an informal N5–N1 range. It is not an official JLPT exam, and no account is required.
What does Yomigi cost?
Free is $0 and gives you 10 freshly generated passages a month—no card required. Standard is $5/month for 250 a month, or $50/year for Annual Standard (pay for 10 months, get 12), plus optional top-ups at $2 per 100 passages. Only newly generated passages count toward the limit.
Can I cancel, and what about refunds?
Yes. Open Account & Settings → Billing → Cancel Standard. You keep Standard until the end of the period you already paid for, then drop back to Free. Update your card from Manage Payment in Link when needed (Yomigi is sold through Stripe Link under Managed Payments). If something looks wrong, email support@yomigi.app.
What should I do if a passage feels wrong?
Use the report button on the reader or recap screen. The report includes the passage and session details—you do not need to write a long bug report.
What data does Yomigi store?
Your account, reading sessions, lookups, quiz answers, difficulty ratings, reports, and profile signals. You can erase your learner profile from Account & Settings. Email support@yomigi.app with privacy questions.
