Japanese Reading Level Test
This free Japanese reading test estimates your approximate JLPT reading range (N5–N1) from five short passages. No account or email. It is not an official JLPT exam. After the result, you can practice nearby reading in Yomigi or open a level page.
How the estimate works
- The first passage sits around N4. A correct answer steps one band up; an incorrect or unsure answer steps one band down.
- Five passages is enough to sketch a range, not to certify a level.
- Questions check whether you understood the scene, not obscure grammar trivia.
What this is not
- Not an official JLPT reading paper, and not a scientifically validated placement exam.
- Not a fluency percentage, IQ-style score, or guarantee of classroom placement.
- Yomigi’s in-app reading still calibrates from lookups and quizzes after you sign up.

Questions
- Is this an official JLPT test?
- No. It is a short, informal reading sample that sketches an N5–N1 range. Official JLPT scores come only from the JLPT.
- Do I need an account?
- No. You can take the test and see a result without signing up. An account is only needed if you want ongoing graded reading in Yomigi.
- How long does it take?
- About three to six minutes. There are five short passages. Harder bands take a little longer to read.
- Can I use a dictionary?
- You can, but the estimate is more useful if you read as you usually would and choose “I’m not sure” when the passage is out of reach.
- What happens if I continue in Yomigi?
- Free signup does not require a card. If you just finished the test, onboarding can pre-select that band as a starting hint. Yomigi still runs its own short reading check and then learns from lookups and quizzes.
